Ellen M. Matthews
April 17, 1943 – October 4, 2018

Former South Bend resident, Ellen Marie Matthews, 75, of Niles died Thursday morning, October 4th in her residence surrounded by her loving family following an illness. Mrs. Matthews was born April 17, 1943 in Marne, MI to the late Frances (Spruit) and Ernest Klein and came to the South Bend area in 1994 coming from Ft. Wayne. On May 2, 1964 in Grand Rapids, MI as Ellen M. Klein she married Donald L. Matthews who preceded her on March 26, 2011. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Denise, Ruth, and Annette; brother, Philip; and brother-in-law, Dr. Dave Veeneman. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle M. Quick (Andrew) of Niles; son, Michael T. Matthews of Granger; granddaughter, Mallory Quick and great-granddaughter, Nahla White both of South Bend; and siblings, Janet Riordan (Jack), Charles Klein (Sandy), Phyllis Klein (Leonard) of Conklin, MI., and Ernie Klein (Laurie) all of Coopersville, MI, Vicki Zemaitis (Rich) of Grand Rapids, and Lorraine Veeneman of Spring Lake, MI.
Growing up, Ellen’s life was always full of family time with sisters and brothers farming the land her family lived on. After high school she moved from Marne, MI to Traverse City where she worked at a radio and TV station. That is where she met her future husband, Donald L. Matthews. She was an accomplished bridal consultant and decorator. Ellen and Donald shared a wonderful marriage that included many vacations to Colorado, Alaska, Hawaii, St. Lucia and St. Thomas. Their most favorite place was Big Pine Key, FL where they spent many winters, fishing and spending time with family and friends. Ellen was devoted to loving her husband, children, grandchild and most recently her great grandchild. Even though Ellen was handicapped later in life, she was always full of joy and never complained of the pain we all knew she was in.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 8th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Committal services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 7th in the funeral home.

It is with a very heavy heart that we are saddened at Ellen's passing. Ellen (Don, Shelley & Mike) were a very big part of our lives during both of our family's time in Ft. Wayne and then were able to keep up the friendship throughout both of our later moves. We have many wonderful memories of times with Ellen and Don and then just with Ellen after Don's passing. I will always cherish the memories and friendship and love we shared as close friends become family. We wish we could be at the funeral service but the distance will not allow us. Just know we will be there in spirit and in touch with Shelley and Mike.

Heartfelt condolences to the Matthews family. I look forward to a time when we no longer have to experience pain or death as mentioned in Revelation 21:4. May Jehovah, the God of comfort, give you peace that surpasses all understanding during this difficult time.
