Leonard Joseph Smudey

July 17, 1953 - Sept. 7, 2018

SOUTH BEND, IN - Leonard lost a hard fought battle with cancer on September 7, 2018. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Leonard was born on July 17, 1953 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Ethel Dekan and Joseph Smudey. He graduated from Brandywine High School and Ivy Tech College. He married his wife Debra on July 21, 1973 at St. Adalbert's Church. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ethel Smudey; and three sisters, Rose Jackson, Patricia Ritschard, and Delores Smudey. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Debra; his two daughters, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Taets and Jessica (Noah) Preissing; three grandsons, Reed Taets, Dylan and Leo Preissing; one granddaughter, Paige Taets; step-granddaughter, Bailey Senff; one surviving sister, Shirley (Dennis) Alvaro; his beloved dog, Abbey; and many extended family, nieces, nephews, and friends he cared for deeply. He worked at Uniroyal for 25 years until their closure. He then started a new career as a service technician for Great Lakes Heating and Cooling, where he remained until he retired in 2016. Leonard was first and foremost a family man. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, bowling, playing basketball and racquet ball, coaching his daughters' sports teams, or just sitting on his front porch visiting with whoever came by. On any given weekend you could find him on the sidelines cheering on his daughters or grandchildren during whatever sporting event they were participating in. He loved spoiling any dog he came in contact with but especially his princess, Abbey. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone he came in contact with, he had a giving and caring spirit, and always put others' needs before his own. Leonard never knew a stranger and his sense of humor, smile and laugh were infectious. He was extremely proud to be a Papa to his grandchildren; he only had a short time with them but made sure to make the most of everyday he could by building memories with them that will be cherished forever. Above all Leonard preached forgiveness, love, and laughter, and he maintained a strong relationship with God. Although he was taken from his family and friends too soon, his memories will be held close to our hearts and last a lifetime. A Memorial Service will be held in his honor on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:00 am at Christ the King Church located at 52473 State Rd. 933, South Bend, IN 46637. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Pet Refuge, American Cancer Society, and Center for Hospice Care in his memory. E-mail condolences may be made at www.welsheimer.com.
