Former Granger resident Betty Jane Crowel, 93 ½ of Mishawaka, died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, September 10th at her home at the Waterford in Mishawaka. Betty was born December 6, 1924 in Tefft, Indiana to the late Vonnie R. and Grace Winoma (Bennett) Hill, and was a lifetime area resident. On January 26, 1946 in South Bend, she married James Seymour Crowel, with whom she shared 64 wonderful years before his passing in 2010. She is survived by three daughters, Jimmielou Guzman of Goshen, Susan Tiller (Gary) of St. Augustine, FL and Gail Camparano (Brant) of Edwardsburg, MI; four grandchildren, Lindsay Mier (Joel), Whitney Phillips (Adam), Abigail Kevnick (Jon) and Brant James Camparano (Kailey); three great-grandchildren, Haley and Nathan Phillips and Tiller J. Mier and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was a graduate of Clay High School and the South Bend Business College. She retired from Allied Stamping Products after 25 years of service as a secretary. She was also employed by the Bendix Corporation. Betty was an avid music fan. She loved dancing to it, listening to it or playing it. She and her husband danced to the big band sounds at the Aragon and other grand ballrooms in Chicago. She loved listening to Frank Sinatra & the Rat Pack. She spent many hours happily playing her wonderful organ. Her family enjoyed gathering around her to sing as she played. She belonged to an organ club in Mishawaka. She loved attending plays at the Morris and surrounding area venues. She especially liked the musicals. As she sat in the audience, she could be seen singing along with the cast members. Betty loved traveling, whether it be cruising on the ocean, exploring Europe by bus, or wintering on the beach in Florida. She was a great collector of sea glass and shells. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren provided a great source of joy for Betty. Their various activities and sporting events were well attended by Betty. She was very proud of them and their accomplishments. Betty was a devout Christian. She attended Maple Lane United Methodist Church where she served as a trustee. When that church disbanded she became a faithful member of Hope United Methodist Church in Edwardsburg, Michigan. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 15, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Pastor Gary Tiller officiating. I was so sorry to hear about your mom. So many good memories of spending time with your family and at neighborhood weddings. Unfortunately I won't be able to make the visitation but know that my prayers will be with all the family at this time of loss.

It meant so much to me that your family was there when my mom passed away.

To the Crowel family:

I worked many with Betty for many years at Allied Products. During that time I also got to know Jim and enjoyed the time we spent with them.

I hope that the wonderful memories of Betty will help ease the pain of her passing. Sending the sincere condolences.
