Pat Catanzarite left to join his wife Betty in the eternal bonds of heaven on August 6, 2018.
Pat (Patsy) Catanzarite was born February 4, 1929 in Ambridge, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Marianne (Zerilli) Catanzarite. Pat grew up in South Bend, and graduated from John Adams High School. Shortly after graduating Pat met a fiery red head named Betty Lou Simmons. They married on June 10, 1950. In 1955 Pat made the decision to attend Barber School in Indianapolis. Upon graduation he returned to South Bend and joined the all Italian staff at the very popular “Rocco’s” barbershop where he began to establish a following. In 1965 Pat decided to go on his own and opened Pat’s Barber Shop on Main Street in South Bend. His clientele continued to grow. Pat’s customers would follow him to two new locations. At both of the new locations Pat was joined by his eternal sidekick, daughter Cathy, and her Heaven and Earth Store.
Pat put the scissors down in 2010. The family would like to thank all of his loyal customers for their life long support. Pat had another career that was better than his haircuts. It started with his joke telling to customers who had no choice but to laugh when the jokester has a razor to your neck. He went on to give motivational comedy speeches anywhere he could get a free meal and room. He even won a cruise in a talent show on a cruise ship. Certainly you have seen the tape if you ever visited Pat’s Barber shop. He was also The Roast Master for The South Bend Press Clubs annual celebrity roast, and multiple times the Roast Master at the Achievement Forum.
Pat also had a love for the St. Joseph County Parks. Pat was responsible for the rehabilitation of the Manion cabin, the development of the Heritage Gardens, and served on the Park Board for many years. Pat always thought St. Pats was named after him.
Pat was also known as the Mayor of Roseland with the office conveniently located at Bob Evans Restaurant. Pat and Betty had a full and wonderful life. When not traveling to Europe or Australia, they would be entertaining friends and family at the Diamond Lake compound. Pat would invite anyone with ears, and then made Betty cook for all the guests. Pontoon rides where Pat’s favorite activity.
Pat was preceded in death By Betty Lou, his wife of 65 years and a sister, Catherine. He leaves to cherish his memory brothers, Domenick and Joseph, and a sister, Theresa; his children, Tom (Billie) of Cassopolis, Larry, of Granger, Cathy, of South Bend, and Patrick J. (Jennifer) of South Bend; grandkids, Scott (Jennifer) Jeff, Dean (Madeline), Ryan (Ali), Cory, Adam, Brooke, Denny, and Connor. Pat was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Owen, Payton, Quinn, Arianna, Nico, Gabriella, Sofia, Chloe, and Lily.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Fr. Paul Doyle will give a religious eulogy at 7:00 p.m.
On Sunday, August 19th, Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Pat’s life from 1 until 5, at the Pfeil Pavilion at where else… St Pat’s County Park. Memorial contributions can be made to Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Pl., Mishawaka, IN, 46545, and to The St. Joseph County Parks Foundation, 50651 Laurel Rd., South Bend, IN, 46637. Many happy memories with Pat and Betty and their family. We will not be able to attend on Thursday but wanted Tom, Larry, Cathy and PJ to know that we will be thinking of them and Pat and will hoist a drink at 7:00 in his memory. Hoping to attend on Sunday at St. Pats.

Dear Tom, Larry, Cathy, PJ, and families,
We grew up in a very special close knit neighborhood under the watchful eyes of all our parents. How lucky we were to share all of them! Your dad was as special to me as your mom was...always caring, thoughtful, interested, and funny! I will treasure my memories!
My deepest sympathy and love to you all,
