SOUTH BEND - Albert Arthur Ewald, Jr., 76, of South Bend died Sunday, April 22 at Signature HealthCARE Bremen following an illness. Al was born May 8, 1941 in LaPorte to the late DeVere L. (Bixler) and Albert A. Ewald and had lived in South Bend since the early 1970's. On November 27, 1970 in South Bend, he married Joan Rae Gaska, who preceded him in death July 19, 1998. He was also preceded in death by sons, James Gaska and Richard Gaska. He is survived by his children, Juliann Unruh (Michael) of LaPaz, IN, Jill Ballard of Havelock, NC, Jerry Gaska Straub (Michael) of Lafayette, IN, and John C Gaska of South Bend, IN, 17 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. 

Al retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for many years in the Granger community. He was a veteran of the United States Army and member of American Legion Post #357. 

Funeral Services will be held at noon Saturday, April 28 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., with Pastor Steve Cox of Cornerstone Community Fellowship, LaPaz, officiating. Committal service and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
