Music by The Piano Brothers

Billy Ray Sandusky, 71, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday December 20, 2016, with his family at his side. He was born October 23, 1945, in Bowling Green, KY, to Estelle Mathews and Wilroe Sandusky. Bill was a gifted Professor of Art, painter, printmaker, and book artist. He received his MA from Indiana University Herron School of Art in Indianapolis in 1968 and his MFA from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA in 1970. While at Tulane, Bill met and fell in love with Giovanna Lenzi, the daughter of an Italian diplomat. When Bill followed Giovanna to Italy, it set the stage for the trajectory of his career.

Bill taught printmaking and drawing at the Santa Reparata Graphic Art Center in Florence, Italy and was a principle printer of etchings and lithographs at the Center. On June 28, 1980, Bill and Giovanna were married in Florence and moved to South Bend where Bill taught in the Saint Mary’s Art Department for 37 years, (three years of which were spent teaching in the Saint Mary’s Rome Program.) In 2014, he advanced to the status of Professor Emeritus, and an endowed scholarship (the Billy Ray Sandusky Scholarship for an Art Student Studying Abroad) was established by a former student in his honor. He leaves a rich legacy through his many students and in the communities where he lived.

Bill is survived by his wife, Giovanna, his sons, Marco (Emily) Sandusky of Tarpon Springs, FL and Matteo (Brittany) Sandusky of New York, NY; sisters Tempo (Michael) Hamm of Brooksville, FL and Cynthia Ware of Orlando, FL; brother Patrick Quillin of Cloverdale, IN; and four grandchildren, Paul, Daniel, Veronica and Nicolas. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother Joie Ware.

A memorial service will be held Friday, December 23, 2016 at 11:00am at Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend, IN 46616. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the service. I'll never forget Professor Sandusky's compliments (so rare and the most valued) or his work ethic. I learned a lot from him. Peace and good wishes to the entire family.

Giovanna and sons- We were so sorry to read of Bill's passing. He and you, were so generous to open your home to me and allow me to relive some old memories. It warmed my heart to see how proud you were of your home and how much you both loved it. I know this is difficult right now, but in time, all the happy memories will outweigh the sadness. Thinking of you and sending prayers to your family. Penny
