 Mary A. Pernic

Nov. 12, 1938 - Jan. 26, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Mary Alice (Burich) Pernic, 77, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2016, in Memorial Hospital. Mary was born on November 12th, 1938, in Granite City, Illinois, the fifth of seven children.

Mary met her husband, Edward, at a Guys and Dolls dance in 1967 in St. Louis, Missouri. They were married on March 14th, 1970, in Granite City, Illinois. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Germany, where Ed was stationed in the U.S. Army. They took advantage of every opportunity to travel Europe, including their ancestral lands of Croatia and Slovenia. After Ed's discharge from the Army in 1971, Ed and Mary moved to South Bend, Indiana, where they raised four children - Rachel, Matthew, Trevor and Allison.

Mary was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and a master of crochet. Her strong Catholic faith was evidenced by her well-worn Rosary, and her compassion for those in need by her frequent contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, Boys Town, St. Jude's Hospital, the South Bend Center for the Homeless, Toys For Tots, and Shriners Hospital.

She also will be remembered for her ever-present sense of humor, resilience, amazing apple pies, love of babies, and her devotion to her family.

Mary is survived by Edward and her four children, as well as granddaughter, Beatrix, and a grandson expected in May 2016.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 1st, at St. Therese, Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31st, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, and one hour prior to the Mass on Monday at the church. Cremation will follow at Welsheimer Crematory. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com
