 Betty L. Catanzarite
August 16, 1930 – August 5, 2015

Betty Lou Catanzarite, 84, of South Bend died at 4:55 a.m. Wednesday, August 5th in Hospice House surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness. Betty was born August 16, 1930 in South Bend to the late Ella Pearl (Bower) and Patt Simmons and was a lifetime area resident. On June 10, 1950 in South Bend as Betty L. Simmons she married Patrick Catanzarite who survives. Also surviving are her children, Thomas C. Catanzarite (Billie) and Larry A. Catanzarite (Colleen Kielton) both of Granger, Cathy A. Catanzarite and P. J. Catanzarite (Jenny Conner) both of South Bend; grandchildren, Scott, Jeff, Dean (Madie), Ryan, Adam, Cory, Dennis, Conner, and Brooke; great-grandchildren, Owen, Payton, Quinn, Arianna, and Nico; sister, Sally Casey (Joseph) of South Bend; brothers, Robert Simmons of Mishawaka and Ronald Simmons of South Bend; and special friends in her life, Martha and Tom Lustik of Granger. She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Johnson, and brothers, David, Earl, Donnie, Jerry and Jack Simmons.
Betty was an ardent admirer of Mother Theresa. She was an advocate for the unfortunate and
the forgotten. She believed and lived the motto “no one is better than you, and you are better than no one.”
Betty was Queen of the Diamond Lake cottage…where for 40 years friends, family and the world was welcome. She cherished the time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Everyone will always remember the wonderful “pastachina,” served with love at any gathering.
Betty also enjoyed peaceful walks around the lakes on the campus of Notre Dame, and her frequent encounters with Father Hesburgh.
Pat and Betty enjoyed numerous trips to Europe where Betty played straight man to Pat and his comedy routines.
Nothing could me more accurate than her last words… “I’ve lived a good life.
Betty had an ear for many and the heart for all. She will be greatly missed and will live forever in our hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 10th in Christ the King Catholic Church. The family will receive friends in the church immediately following the mass.

Oh how sad that another one bites the dust from our childhood Hollyhock 'hood. Betty's obituary was a wonderful tribute to her - what a special lady! My heart hurts for not only her Pat and her kids but also for her extended family and friends who mourn her passing. I bid you all peaceful hearts. Sg

So sorry for your loss. I remember Mrs. Catanzarite from the neighborhood on Forestbrook and Hollyhock Roads. I used to play with Tommy and Larry and have recently added pictures of them to my scrapbook. My mom and dad were Bruce and Margaret Berger. We all enjoyed your family so much. God bless you all.

Carolyn and I learned of Betty's passing while we were out of state traveling. It was a strange feeling knowing we were not going to be able to get back to say "good by" to Betty. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Betty and the entire Catanzarite family.
