Janice M. Gavin Oct. 17, 1933 - Dec. 22, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Former South Bend resident Janice Marie Gavin, 81, died Monday, December 22nd, in Golden Living Fountainview, Mishawaka. Mrs. Gavin was born October 17, 1933, in Green Bay, WI, to the late Marie (Cartier) and Austin Ber-endsen and had lived in the South Bend area since 1960. On May 22, 1954, in Green Bay, she married Donald T. Gavin, who preceded her in death October 8, 2013. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Carlson, and her brother, Robert Berendsen. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Sharp (Brian) of Granger, IN, Julie Putman (Todd) of Columbia City, IN, and Deanna Eberly (Mike) of South Bend; one son, Larry Gavin (Therese) of Lake Orion, MI; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joyce Weid of Green Bay. Janice spent most of her life creating a loving home for her family. She was fun-loving and enjoyed sharing her thoughts and wisdom with everyone she met. She finally decided to work outside the home after her four children where in school full-time. Starting her career as a cashier at Darnell Drug store, she then became a pharmacy technician, and finally a self-taught dental assistant. She retired in 2002 to spend more time with her husband, Donald, and her grandchildren. Janice had many hobbies. She loved to sew, creating beautiful gowns for her children's weddings, costumes for Halloween, plays, and altering anything that her family or friends needed. She also, loved to crochet and knit, play bridge, arranging flowers, she was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, a collector of items she displayed in her home. She also loved her pets. Another one of her many family activies was camping. She organized multiple trips ranging from a simple weekend at Potato Creek, to a long trip to the Rocky Mountains. Janice and Donald were able to travel to Cancun and had a fabulous trip to Europe. They were happily married for 59 years. Her family and friends will miss her dearly. We love you, Mommy and Grandma!! A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27th, in St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 Ironwood Dr., with Rev. Thomas Shoemaker officiating. Committal services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, December 26th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., and in the church on Saturday one hour prior to Mass.
