Shirley Ann Rooks

November 17, 1929 – April 13, 2014

Shirley Ann Rooks, 84, loving wife and devoted mother, passed away 7:45 a.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014 in West Woods of Niles, after an extended illness. She was born November 17, 1929, in South Bend, to the late Elmer J. and Bernice (Ritter) Miller. She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Arthur Peabody.

Her survivors include her husband of 61 years, Lloyd, daughter, Paula (Conrad) Bradich, of Eagle River, WI, son, Dan (Misti) Rooks of South Bend, brother, Dwight (Sally) Miller of South Bend, sister-in-law, Lois Peabody of Niles, MI, and grandson, James Pender of Rhinelander, WI, along with nieces and nephews.

Shirley was a lifelong member of Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, South Bend, and the Eastern Star for 50 years. She retired after 16 years of being employed by the American Lung Association in South Bend. Lloyd and Shirley volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Leighton Center, as well as being involved in many church activities. They also did some traveling and enjoyed being with friends. Shirley enjoyed baking, reading, sewing, yard work and gardening. Shirley saw the good in everyone.

The family would like to say thank you for the caring and support the staff at West Wood of Niles has given to Shirley in the past 4 years.

Funeral services will be held 11:00a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, 2402 Lincolnway West, South Bend, with Rev. Jennifer Weaver officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church for friends and relatives. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. and one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, 2402 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN, 46628.
