Music by The Piano Brothers

Herschel I. Riley, 91, passed away Friday, April 11, 2014, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born in Greenfield, Ohio, and came from a family of thirteen siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Ann Riley; his daughters, Diane (Tom) Lindzy of Hazelwood, MO, Patricia (Steve Snyder) O'Connor of Syracuse, IN, and Rebecca (Todd) Zaseck of Granger, IN; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his brother, Hayward (Roberta) Riley of Greenfield, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude Katherine (Staats) and Jacob Shively Riley and eleven of his siblings. Hersh found enjoyment in all his life's works: teacher, coach, root beer stand owner, 35 years in management with The Traveler's Insurance Company and finally in "retirement" as the owner and manager of The Farmington Tennis Club in Farmington, Michigan. He served his country during World War II by enlisting in the Army Air Corps where he was a crew member on a B17 Flying Fortress. After the war, he enrolled in Ohio University where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Business Administration. Hersh was successful in life because he truly loved people. He especially enjoyed cooking for his family and friends at his home, club and his beloved Notre Dame football games. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, April 14, 2014, at the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 11:30 am, with Msgr. William Schooler officiating. Entombment will follow the services at Riverview Cemetery at 2300 Portage, Ave., South Bend. I was telling my husband what a neat relationship you two had, and what an attentive and loving wife you were to Hersh. I know you always turned that around and would say what a great person he was, but I just want to send my admiration and respects to you. My heart goes out to you because I know he will be so dearly missed in your life. I barely knew Hersh but I know he was a blessed man to have you in his life. Peace to you as life changes. I'm so sorry to be in Indy and not at the funeral, but hopefully will see you tomorrow at Welsheimer's. Be the strong person you are…. let love and prayers hold you together.
