Elizabeth "Anne" Esch, 92 of South Bend, died Friday evening March 21, 2014 at Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. She was born May 04, 1921 in Mount Pleasant New York to the late Moreland Ackroyd Horsfall and Ruth Huntly White. She had one sister Peggy Horsfall Bennett (Bill Benett) who preceded her in death in a tragic apartment fire in New York City. Her mother passed away when she was only eight years old and she spent most of her childhood in New York, Limerock Connecticut, Chappequa, West Palm Beach, and lived in Havanna Cuba where her father was a real estate planner. Her childhood was full of many adventures, travels, and she was surrounded by many talented and creative people who certainly added to her character and charm. She came to South Bend with her sister and father in 1945. She worked at Roberton's Department Store as a jewelry buyer, and later went to work as a draftsperson at I & M Electric. She met her future husband Edward Rhienhold Esch Jr. of South Bend and married August 29, 1947. He preceded her in death as well as her son Edward Rhienhold Esch III. She is survived by her daughter Frances Anne DeFreeuw, who is also her best friend; her cherished grandsons, Christopher Dey DeFreeuw of Portland Oregon and Andrew James DeFreeuw of San Diego California. She also is survived by her loving niece Marcia Towne, great nieces and nephew Kate, Beth, Martie, and Lance; and the Jones family that were so dear to her heart.

"Anne", as she was known to most of her friends, could not leave that creative spark in her blood alone. She was extremely artistic and when offered an apprenticeship with a local area Interior Designer she could not refuse. She balanced her life between her family whom she was totally dedicated even with a special needs son, and her career with total grace and expertise that was amazing. She taught classes at IUSB in the Continuing Education Department, worked, and helped women at the YWCA with design and home decorating. Anne worked at a wide variety of design and furniture stores in our area. She also did commercial work with construction companies planning color layouts and textile work. She was involved in many Designer Show Houses in our area and Model Homes. She loved her vocation, and especially loved her last place of employment with Interiors Etc. in Mishawaka. She worked there until she was 89. She adored and developed many special friendships with her coworkers and made many friends with her clients along the years. Her customers meant the world to her....many special bonds were formed. Her sincerity and talent could not be denied when dealing with her clients. Unlike so many she loved to go to work each day! Anne was hard working and determined, but held a gentle demeanor that could only be admired. She influenced many people with her positive attitude towards life, class, sense of humor, and caring for all those around her. She was a true inspiration to us all. She will leave a large void in the heart of many especially her family. It is not often that you meet a person with so much grace, talent and integrity. She was always ready for a challenge and was not intimidated by anything. She was as close to sainthood as you can find on this earth. The family would like to send a special thank you of appreciation to Healthwin, who showed exceptional care and kindness to Anne while she was there. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge, 4626 Burnette Dr., South Bend, Indiana 46614.

The family will receive friends to celebrate Anne’s life from 4 until 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 26th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Private family memorial and graveside services will be held at a later date at Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.

To the family of Elizabeth Anne Esch,

My husband and I were saddened about the passing of your love one. Anne came to our home and advised us on the colors to be used in our home. She did an excellent job. We have been told on numerous occasions how the colors in our home compliment each other. Our home is very special and warm and part of that is a tribute to Anne. After reading her wonderful obituary I realized her niece has the same name as mine, Marcia Towne spelled the same way. I'm sure heaven is more beautiful beyond any of our expectations. Now it is even more awesome because of Anne's presents.

Dear Fran and family:
Our deepest condolences upon the passing of Anne. She was one of the most delightful creatures on Earth. Always a warm greeting, always congenial, always uplifting, always hardworking and always loving. Certainly the world would be a better place if everyone was more like her. She left with us a great example of how to live. It was an honor and a privelege to meet her and know her.

Anne was a good friend of our family for many years. She was a bridesmaid at our folk's wedding, and attended their 50th with Mike Jones. She decorated the home on Kessler Blvd. twice, and the home on Candlewycke Ct. once. along with assisting me with several Panorama of Homes models, and my current home in Granger. A nicer and more caring person you won't find. Condolences to Fran & the family from the Hays.
