Donald T. Gavin

February 16, 1929 – October 8, 2013

Donald T. Gavin, 84, of South Bend, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Golden Living Center Fountainview, Mishawaka. Donald was born February 16, 1929, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to the late Thomas and Gertrude (Despins) Gavin. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Tom Gavin, Jean Gavin, Lois Gellin, Sally Anne Huempfner, and Rev. Phil Gavin. On May 22, 1954, in Green Bay, WI, Donald married Janice Marie (Berendsen), who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Karen (Brian) Sharp, of Granger, Julie (Todd) Putman, of Columbia City, IN, and Deanna (Mike) Eberly, of Osceola; one son, Larry (Therese) Gavin, of Buffalo, New York; twelve grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Donald proudly served his country in the U S Navy. He retired in 1994 as a salesman from A B Dick. He also worked as a courtesy driver for Gates Chevrolet. He was a member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, and baked Eucharist bread for the church.

Donald loved life and his family. He was always on the go, whether it was vacationing with his family, going to work, taking whichever dog he had at the time for a walk (dogs names in order of time frame -Muffett, Ginger, Bayber, Sydney, or Molly). He had a very gentle soul. He would help anyone in need. He was a dad that you could count on no matter how bad the problem was. His hobbies included camping, cheering for his favorite teams, the Green Bay Packers or Notre Dame, and traveling to Cancun, Puerto Rico, Germany and Paris as well as many of his favorite state parks. Some of his many favorite sayings were "peace be with you, not on you", and “fastest eater gets the most”. Most of all his family was MOST important. He had the most off the wall sense of humor. Everyone that knew Don will miss him dearly. We love you wonderful husband, daddy, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October, 12, 2013, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Rev. Thomas Shoemaker officiating. My grandpa was an amazing man. He loved so many things and knew how to make anyone laugh. There was a week where he came to watch over my brother and I, while our parents were out of town that I will never forget. We made a great big fort together, laughed everyday and he told us stories at night. It was like a vacation to Neverland and a favorite childhood memory to me. I will miss him so much and our talks about the family dog or the latest football game. I know he is watching over us and sharing his good humor with those who are with him in heaven.
I love you Grandpa and miss you already

I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I remember him chatting with my dad in the front yard of your house or ours. He was always smiling that big smile. He was so nice to me and John whenever he saw us. The neighborhood was not the same when your parent's moved. I pray for you and your families and your Mom to have peace in your hearts. Remember all the happy joyous times you had with your dad. He was a very special person. God Bless.
