William E. “Bill” Johnson

February 6, 1929 – May 15, 2013

William E. “Bill” Johnson, 84, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother-in-law and uncle entered eternal life on May 15, 2013.  Bill was born February 6, 1929, to Eva and Earl Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife, Regina, of South Bend.  They wed on August 27, 1949.  He is also survived by his daughter, Lari, grandson, Dennis and his wife, Robin, and two treasured great-grandsons, Emerson and Cullen, all of Fountain Hills, Arizona.  He is also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in Arizona and Missouri and his beloved nieces, nephews and their families in Arizona, Missouri, Indiana, Kansas and California.

Bill worked his way up the ranks of the Indiana State Police, starting his career and a Trooper in 1951, moved to Corporal in 1955 and in 1962 was promoted to First Sergeant and Post Commander in South Bend.  In 1966 he retired from his public service career and became Director of Safety in the trucking industry until 1971.  He then entered into freight sales where he again excelled and won several awards.  He retired from the trucking industry in 1990.

Bill returned to his love of public service as security patrol on a local golf course and then he took a campus security position at St. Mary’s College from which he ultimately retired.

Bill loved his family and friends and had a wonderful sense of humor.  He had many hobbies including golf, fishing, spectator sports, photography, art, various collections and music. Bill always kept busy, starting a private investigation business, he built himself a dark room and took professional photos of weddings and functions for people and was a talented commercial artist.

His daughter said, “He changed so many lives by just being himself.  He always looked on the brighter side of life.  One of his favorite sayings was ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff’”.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Healthwin, 20531 Darden Road, South Bend.  No flowers please. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com
