Carl R. Picking, Jr.


Carl R. Picking, jr.  72 of South Bend passed away Tuesday afternoon July 6, 2010 in Memorial Hospital.  He was born September 13, 1937 in Mishawaka to the late Carl R. and Blanche (Carpenter) Picking, sr.  On May 7, 1960 in Mishawaka he married Gertrude E. “Betty” Penkela who died April 22, 2001.  Left to cherish his memory are his children Genevive( John) Gentry of White Pigeon, MI, Carla (Don) Bays of South Bend,Roberta (Jerry) Jones of South Bend, Mary Lou Adams of Constantine, MI, Christy (Keith) Delaurelle of Mishawaka, and Bonnie Picking of South Bend, Carl Picking III and fiancée Gail Richardson of Mishawaka, Robert (Becky) Quimby of Granger, and Ralph (Barb) Quimby of Harrisonburg, VA.  20 grand children 25 ½ great grand children and 4 great-great- grand children. His siblings Joyce (James) Sanders of Knoxville, TN, Robert (Nadine) Picking of Zephyrhills, FL, Duane (Ingrid) Picking of Tampa, FL, and James (Diane) Picking, sr. of South Bend Carl attended Mishawaka High School after which he served with honor in the United States Army and was discharged in 1957.  He retired from A.M. General in 2000 after 29 years service.  His family was number 1 in his life he was an “Awesome” Dad and Grandfather.  He had a big heart for all that knew him.  He loved to fish and he and Betty fished together for many years.  He loved Rogers Resort on Lilly Lake and his friends there.  Being a diehard Cubs and Notre Dame fan his lifetime, also the Bears and Indianapolis Colts football.  Services will be held today July 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home 521 N. William Street. And burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

I'm really going to miss our private talks by the lake Carl. I couldn't have asked for a better father- in-law. Rest in peace and say hi to Betty for me buddy.
