Sandra Elaine Neilson

September 27, 1941—June 4, 2013

Sandra Elaine (Bobby) Neilson, 71, of South Bend passed away peacefully on June 4, 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Sandra was born in Manor, PA to Wesley and Goldie (Droutz) Mellon and moved to South Bend in 1962.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Wesley Mellon, and five sisters: Alice J. Mellon, Arlene Sensenich, Donna Mellon, Lois Valek, and Shirley Mellon.  Surviving siblings include sisters Sarah Moore of Madison, PA and Judith Magnett of Lynnwood, WA.  A brother, William Mellon of Puryear, TN and sister-in-law Vera Mellon of Irwin, PA also survive.

Sandra was married to Walter Neilson for 21 years.  They had four wonderful sons, all of whom survive: Barry (Pamela) of South Bend, Randy (Dana) of Niles, Rusty (Lacinda) of St. Joseph, and Brady (Shawna) of South Bend.   She is also survived by five grandchildren: Austin Neilson of Lansing, MI, Kelsey Neilson of Grand Rapids, MI, and Ryan, Justin, and Nicholas Neilson all of South Bend.  She was very proud of all of them.

Sandra’s life revolved around her family and being a mother and grandmother were her greatest joys.  She got the most enjoyment from life’s simplest things. She loved her animals, music, reading, crossword puzzles, tending to her houseplants, and her garden.  She relished cooking and getting together with family and friends to enjoy a nice meal.  She always made sure there was plenty of food.  She also loved movement and spontaneous activities. She was always ready to go when family or friends suggested going somewhere on an adventure.

Sandra retired from Lincoln National Life Insurance Company and then retired after 23 years with AM General.  She also worked many years at Notre Dame Concessions, making numerous friends and enjoying many memories.  She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church on Laurel Road in South Bend.  She loved giving back to the community so others may experience life’s blessings.  She was an active volunteer with the Mother of Twins Club, Maurice Matthys Little League, Washington High School Band Boosters, a Boy Scouts den mother, Professional Secretaries International, American Cancer Society: Relay for Life, Indiana Sheltie Rescue among many other fine organizations and causes.  In addition, she supported her children and grandchildren by going to their games and activities. She could always be counted on to lend an ear when they needed to talk.

Sandra’s family would like to thank the many people that helped her with care during her battle with cancer despite the many challenges she faced.  The family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.  The family would also appreciate any memories friends and acquaintances would share of Sandra’s life at www.welsheimer.com   In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any memorial contributions in Sandra’s name to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Bend, 51490 Laurel Rd., South Bend, IN 46637 or the Indiana Sheltie Rescue, 23163 S.R. 37 North, Noblesville, IN 46060 http://indianasheltierescue.org/

Welsheimer Family Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me,

For now I’m free

I’m following the path

God laid for me.

I took his hand

When I heard Him call

I turned my back, and left it all,

I could not stay another day,

To laugh, to love,

To work or play.

If my parting has left a void

Then fill it with remembered joy

A friendship shared,

A laugh, a kiss.

Be not burdened

With times of sorrow

I wish you the

Sunshine of tomorrow.

My life’s been full,

I savored much,

Good friends, good times,

A loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,

Don’t lengthen it now

With undue grief.

Lift up your heart

And share with me

God wanted me now,

He set me free.

It's hard to understand why our loved ones are taken from us, but take comfort in knowing each of you, her four sons, were a special part of such a well lived life.
