Anne O. Abernethy

December 3, 1948 – June 3, 2013

Anne O’ Brien Abernethy, 64, of South Bend died peacefully Monday, June 3rd in the Elkhart Hospice House surrounded by her loving family following a courageous 6 ½-year battle with Breast Cancer.

Anne was born December 3, 1948 in South Bend to the late Nancy (Henderson) and John W. O’Brien and was a lifetime resident of the area. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and received a B.A. degree in 1970 from Western Michigan University. Following graduation, she became a Real Estate Broker and then a Mortgage Loan Officer before starting her family. On July 1, 1978 in South Bend she married John “Spike” Abernethy who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Sarah Petty (Ken) of South Bend, Megan Caplis (Tom) of Clarendon Hills, IL, and Molly Roussell (Aaron) of Lewisburg, PA; five grandsons, Benjamin, Cameron and Cooper Petty, Connor Caplis, and Riley Roussell; two sisters, Kathy Rochette (George) of Goodyear, AZ and Patricia Cotter (Michael) of Helena, MT; and two brothers, John J. O’Brien (Linda) of Mishawaka and Major O’Brien of Naples, FL.

Anne was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was always very involved in her children’s school activities. She enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening and spending time with her family at their lake cottage in South Haven, Michigan. Anne was a dedicated board member of the IU Simon Cancer Center Development Board and the Indiana Landmarks Foundation Board. She and Spike served as loving foster parents for several newborn babies until they were placed with their adoptive families. Anne also served as the Archivist of the First United Methodist Church, was on the Collections Committee of the Center for History, and contributed her time and talents over many years to the Camp Eberhart Alumni Association, having attended Camp as a camper and counselor over 14 fabulous summers. She loved sports and faithfully followed her ill-fated yet beloved Chicago Cubs.

Anne’s family would like to thank Dr. Rafat Ansari and his wonderful staff as well as the nurses and doctors at The Center for Hospice Care for their compassionate attention.

A celebration of Anne’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8th at First United Methodist Church, 333 N. Main St., South Bend with Rev. Mary Hubbard officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Friday, June 7th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd.

As an adoption specialist for Catholic Charities for more than 26 years, I have had the pleasure of working with Anne as the foster mother of our babies - who became for a brief time, the babies of your whole family! She was always gracious and giving of her time and love as you well know. I have a letter she wrote me when she ended fostering and since she mentions her three duaghters, I thought you all might like to read it. If so, let me know at 234-3111 and I will send you a copy." the last moment, I am absolutely passive in the hands of the great unknown forces that have formed me..." Teilhard de Chardin

Today Jeff Gibney and I came to the funeral home too early and could not stay. We want you and your family to know that we celebrate Anne's life through fond memories and through watching her spirit reflected in her children - you in particular since we know you best. Bless all of you for being such a cohesive and bonded family. I am sure that as Anne left her pain behind she was buoyed by having her family around her.

We are holding you and your family in the Light for warmth, courage and healing.
