Dale J. Wheeler

Dale Joshua Wheeler, 75, of South Bend died Sunday, November 25, 2012 in Sanctuary of Holy Cross, South Bend.  Mr. Wheeler was born November 25, 1937 in Chesterton, IN to the late Laurabelle (Walker) and Earl Wheeler and had lived most of his adult life in the South Bend area.  On July 19, 1958 in Chesterton he married Janet “Kay” Ericson who survives.  Also surviving are two sons, Guy Wheeler (Cindy) of South Bend and Boyd Wheeler (Nancy) of Lafayette, IN; five grandchildren, Haley, Jack, Cameron, Cole, and Kennady Wheeler; his sister, Angeline Lewis (Leroy) of Michigan City, IN; his sister-in-law, Gayle Wiese (Douglas) of Westville, IN; and nieces and nephews, Jennifer Wiese, LeAnn Miller, Timothy Lewis, and Robert Lewis.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Sterling and Gordon Wheeler. He was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance for several years and eventually opened his own insurance agency from which he retired.  Dale was a devoted father and grandfather.  He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their soccer, baseball, football and basketball games along with several of his granddaughter’s dance recitals.   He always made sure that for each grandchild’s first Christmas they would receive a “special” wooden rocking horse. He enjoyed IU basketball and was a big Bobby Knight fan.  He greatly enjoyed his many fishing trips to Canada with his fishing buddies.  He served in the United States Marine Corps, was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, St. Joseph Lodge #294, F&AM, and the South Bend Association of Life Underwriters of which he served as president in 1978-79.  In 1977 he received the Herbert L. Cramer Award for Life Underwriter of the Year.  Dale will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 29th in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1021 Manchester Dr., South Bend with Rev. Kenneth Peterson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 28th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. and on Thursday in the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 130 Red Coach Dr., Mishawaka, IN, 46545 or the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, 801 Roeder Rd., Suite 750, Silver Spring, MD, 20910 or the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, 922 E.
