 Helen L. Petersen

May 29, 1926 – April 26, 2012

 

Helen Louise (Weihrouch) Petersen of Sanctuary of St Paul’s died on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.  Helen was born on May 29, 1926 in Chicago to the late Edith (Mills) and Alexander Weihrouch.  Her family moved to South Bend when Helen was a toddler and she spent most of her life in South Bend.  On November 25, 1948 in South Bend she married Jack W Petersen who survives.  Also surviving is her son Mike (Jeri) Petersen of Raleigh, NC; daughter Mary (Mike) Zangerle of Moorpark, CA; grandchildren Justin Zangerle of Sherman Oaks, CA and Melissa Zangerle of San Diego, CA; and her sister Mary Jo Reid of Wheeling, IL.  She was preceded in death by her brother Robert Weihrouch of Okatie, SC.

 

Helen graduated from Central High School in 1944.  She worked in the trust department of First Bank and Trust Co (now First Source Bank).  While her husband attended Purdue, she worked as secretary to the superintendent of the West Lafayette School system and as secretary at West Lafayette Junior High School.  After Helen and Jack returned to South Bend, Helen became the organist at Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, where she played for 40 years.  Helen was a member of the American Guild of Organists, where she served as treasurer.  She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 60 years.

 

Burial will be private.  A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, May 7, 2012 at 2 PM in the chapel at the Sanctuary at St Paul’s, 3602 South Ironwood Drive, South Bend, Indiana.  Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Aunt Helen. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family at this difficult time. I will especially be thinking of her and everyone today.
