SOUTH BEND - Hunter Otis Gentry, 90, passed away peacefully Friday, February 17, 2017, in his home with family and loved ones present. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Nancy (Petzhold) Gentry. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Hunter (Wayne) Gentry, and is survived by his children: Richard (Lorie) Roberts, Larry (Gail) Gentry, Steve (Pam) Roberts, Beth (John) White, Brad (Cheryl) Gentry, along with 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as his sister-in-law, Pat Lawler, four nieces and nephews, and 7 great-nieces and nephews. Born in Proffitt, VA, on October 11, 1926, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Gentry, he went to school at The Miller School of Albemarle and graduated from Navy Elect Schools prior to enlisting in the Navy in October 1943 where he served our country during WW II and the Korean Conflict until he retired in June 1970 in South Bend, IN, during the Vietnam War. After the Navy, he worked for the City of South Bend where he served as an electrical inspector for 26 years and retired in 1996. He was a member of South Bend Lodge 294 F&AM. He enjoyed serving the Navy, traveling around the world, time with family, and bowling. He was loved by his family and many friends. He will be missed dearly ~Fair Winds, Following Seas. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, February 21, 2017, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Burial with military honors will be at Highland Cemetery following services. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House.
