Helen C. Mester

Oct. 19, 1955 - Mar. 31, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Helen Vandewalle Mester is at peace. She died on Saturday, March 31, 2018. While Helen's life was cut short by Multiple Sclerosis, she lived her life with zest and curiosity, and left behind an incredible legacy of love. She is survived by her husband, Gary, and their two children, Geoff and Clare.

Helen was born on October 19, 1955, the fifth child of Julian and Evelyn Vandewalle. Helen is further survived by her mother and 11 siblings: Larry, Mark, PJ, Mary, Patty, John, Julie, Joe, Mike, Ann, and Susan.

Helen graduated from St. Joseph's High School, IUSB, and received her MBA from the University of Notre Dame. She was a network administrator for a national corporation for over 20 years.

Helen loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures with family and friends to places near and far. She especially enjoyed nature and in recent years spent many hours soaking in the tranquility of her sprawling backyard, a sanctuary of trees, flowers, and wildlife.

All of her years, Helen enjoyed a good party. She made friends easily and her nearest and dearest supported her right up to her final hours.

To the many caregivers in Helen's life, thank you. Words cannot begin to acknowledge how much Helen's family appreciated your compassion and tender loving care.

A celebration of Helen's life will be held at Little Flower Parish on Saturday, April 7. Visitation will be from 1:30-2:30 and a Memorial Service will follow the visitation. Guests are encouraged to wear purple, Helen's favorite color.

Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Family and friends may leave email condolences at www.welsheimer.com.

Our prayers to the Mester family. I knew Helen through the Christ Renews His Parish Retreat several years ago at St Joseph Church South Bend. She was a true blessing and an amazing person who I know will be greatly missed. My prayers are with the family at this time of loss.
