 Dorothy L. Burling

Aug. 1, 1929 - Feb. 4, 2018

MISHAWAKA - Dorothy L. Burling, 88, of Mishawaka died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, February 4, in Hospice House of South Bend. Dorothy was born August 1, 1929 to the marriage of Fern and Ardell Arnold in Marshall, MI. In November of 1946 she married Eugene L. Peterson. They were blessed with three wonderful children, Randy L., Steven E., and Jennifer J. Peterson. Her husband Eugene died in 1965; her son Steven in 1969 in a fatal auto accident; and her daughter Jennifer in 1994 from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. In 1977 she married William S. Burling, who preceded her in death in January of 2008. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lauramae Tarney and F. Irene Keb of South Bend; and her brother, William Arnold. She is survived by her son, Randy and wife Sherry; two stepchildren, Stacey Burling Bredenberg of Orlando, FL and John Burling, PhD and wife Kathy of Monticello, AL; two grandchildren, Dana Sullivan of Granger, IN and Kyle Peterson of Phoenix, AZ; four great-grandchildren, Maggie, Pete, Sam, and Joe Sullivan; and step-grandchildren, Adam and Colin Bredenberg.

During her years as a single parent she worked for many years in offices in the construction industry. Dorothy and her late husband Bill Burling moved to Howe, IN, where they enjoyed 15 years of their retirement in a lakefront home at North Twin Lake. They enjoyed several years fishing, boating, and the great fun they had with their friends and neighbors in the lake community. She loved entertaining neighbors, and family and friends from South Bend. After 15 years at the lake they moved back to Mishawaka so that Bill could be closer to the medical care he needed, where they lived at the time of his death. She continued living in Mishawaka following his death so that she could be close to her son, Randy, and his family.

As per her wishes there will be no visitation or service. Cremation will take place and she will be buried with her loved ones at Highland Cemetery. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Family and friends may leave email condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
